Program Requirements

Science, Discovery and the Universe is a program intended for all students who have a sense of curiosity about Science in general and Astronomy in particular, whatever their majors might be. To that end, we strive to offer a set of academically rigorous supporting courses in which any student may be expected to succeed. We are also aware of the great many other requirements students must meet outside of Scholars and have therefore listed courses which dovetail with some CORE and typical major requirements. Freshmen will conduct a short interview with one or both co-directors both Fall and Spring terms to oversee many issues, including staying on top of these requirements.

To earn a Science, Discovery, and the Universe (SDU) Scholars Citation, you must model good community citizenship and complete 22-25 credits from specified courses during the two-year program (if you are exempt from ENGL 101, or have Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate credit, those will help count toward these credits). You must earn a minimum grade point average of 3.0 in Scholars SDU citation courses and a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 in all courses at UMD during the two year period of the Scholars program. All students are expected to comply with the University's Code of Academic Integrity.
